What is Cupping?

Cupping is a safe and enjoyable Traditional Chinese modality that has been used to treat many different conditions. Cups are placed on the back to create a vacuum-like seal. The superficial muscle tissue is drawn up into the cup and increases the circulation. Though it sometimes leaves marks they should fade within a few days to a week. These marks look as if they might hurt; however, it feels more like a deep tissue massage. Patients usually notice their muscles are more relaxed, less stiff and/or the pain is gone or greatly reduced immediately afterwards.
Cupping is most often used to treat many types of pain, stiff and tight muscles, respiratory conditions, emotional imbalances and cellulite.

Note:

  • Cupping can be very effective at the onset of cold or flu symptoms to reduce the length of illness.
  • Keep the cupped area covered from sun, wind and extreme temperatures for several hours following treatment to avoid any adverse effects.  (Cupping opens your pores to release pathogens and you wouldn’t want them to go deeper and cause greater issues.)
  • Cupping can leave marks.  Please avoid if you have an important or special event coming up such as a wedding or having photos taken.
